11 A.M. WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW BREAKING NEWS THIS MORNING. A DEADLY CRASH THROUGH A CONSTRUCTION ZONE IN WAUKESHA COUNTY. THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ALONG CAPITOL DRIVE NEAR PEWAUKEE ROAD. THAT’S WHERE WE FIND 12 NEWS HANNAH HILYARD LIVE ON THE SCENE. AND HANNAH, HOW WAS THE SCENE? HOW WAS THE SCENE CHANGED SINCE OUR LAST UPDATE? JUST ABOUT HALF AN HOUR AGO? WELL, GERRON, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONFIRM THROUGH THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON DID DIE AS A RESULT OF THIS SERIOUS CRASH HERE ALONG CAPITOL DRIVE. WE STILL HAVE SHERIFF DEPUTIES AND INVESTIGATORS OUT HERE ON SCENE, AND THAT MANGLED CAR THAT WE’VE BEEN SHOWING YOU, IT STILL REMAINS HERE ON SCENE, JUST PUSHED ASIDE INTO THIS GRASSY MEDIAN HERE ALONG BUSY CAPITOL DRIVE. BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU SOME VIDEO FROM UP ABOVE NEWS CHOPPER 12 RIGHT AS IT ARRIVES. SPOTTED PARAMEDICS WORKING ON ONE PERSON EVENTUALLY THOSE PARAMEDICS PUTTING A TARP ON THAT PERSON. NOW ON OUR WAY. OUR WAY HERE ON THE GROUND. WE SAW AT LEAST ONE AMBULANCE WITH SIRENS AND LIGHTS HEADING EASTBOUND ON 94. RIGHT NOW WE’RE ONLY SEEING THE SMASHED CAR, BUT WHAT CAUSED THAT DAMAGE? THAT IS UNKNOWN RIGHT NOW. THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE JUST CONSIDERING THIS OR CALLING THIS RIGHT NOW A SERIOUS CRASH. IT’S CLEAR THIS IS SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. ON A NORMAL DAY, THE BUSY STREET DOWN TO ONE LANE FOR TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS RIGHT NOW, NO TRAFFIC ALLOWED HERE ON CAPITOL DRIVE NEAR PEWAUKEE ROAD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS SCENE, WE ARE SEEING SOME CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN A CLUSTER THERE ON THE OTHER SIDE, CLOSER TO PEWAUKEE ROAD. BUT FOR THE MOST PART, IT LOOKS LIKE THE INVESTIGATORS THEY’VE LAID DOWN THEIR EVIDENCE MARKERS, AND IT IS RELATIVELY QUIET HERE. THIS IS ABOUT AS CLOSE AS THEY’RE ALLOWING US TO GET RIGHT NOW WE ARE WAITING TO HEAR FROM THE WAUKESHA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO GET AN EXACT NUMBER OF INJURIES AND FATALITIES. BUT AGAIN, WITHIN THE LAST HALF HOUR, THEY HAVE CONFIRMED THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON DIED AS A RESULT OF THIS CRASH. HERE IN THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE. GERRON HANNAH HILYARD REPORTING LIVE FOR US THIS MORNING ON THE GROUND NEAR CAPITOL DRIVE AND PEWAUKEE ROAD. HANNAH. THANK YOU. LET’S SEND IT UP TO MATT SALEMME, WHO PICKS UP OUR LIVE TEAM COVERAGE. HE’S IN NEWS CHOPPER 12 FLYING ABOVE THE SCENE. MATT, WHAT ARE YOU SEEING FROM YOUR VANTAGE POINT? RIGHT, GERRON I’VE BEEN WATCHING AS THEY’VE BEEN KIND OF PUTTING THESE EVIDENCE MARKERS DOWN. ANYTIME THERE’S A FATALITY INVOLVED WITH THE COLLISION, THEY HAVE TO DO A FULL RECONSTRUCTION AND YOU CAN SEE THERE’S SOME WHITE EVIDENCE MARKERS DOWN RIGHT HERE THAT LEAD UP TO A COUPLE OF THE CONSTRUCTION CONES. UH, ONE OF THEM’S BENT OVER, AND THEN THERE’S TWO OF THE BASES OF HIM, AND THEY’RE BROKEN OFF HERE. THEN THERE’S A COUPLE MORE EVIDENCE MARKERS AND A FOLDED UP CONSTRUCTION SIGN. THEN DOWN A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 164. WE SEE ANOTHER COUPLE OF BARRELS KNOCKED OVER, AND YOU CAN SEE A, A, UH, EVIDENCE MARKER RIGHT NEXT TO THOSE BASES. A LITTLE BIT FURTHER, WE SEE SOME OF THE CEMENT FORMS KIND OF MOVED OUT OF PLACE. AND A THREE, FOUR, FIVE MORE EVIDENCE MARKERS RIGHT THERE AT THE INTERSECTION. SO IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’VE GOT A LONG PATH TO DO HERE OF THIS RECONSTRUCTION. NOW THE CLOSURE IS EXTENDING FROM HIGH FIELD. UH, THEY’RE SENDING PEOPLE EITHER NORTH OR SOUTH AND THEY’RE WEAVING THEIR WAY THROUGH MEADOWBROOK HERE. UH, ONTO, UH, SWAN AND THEN THAT IS FORCING THEM OVER TO 164, WHICH IS ALSO CLOSED. SO IT’S A VERY DIFFICULT REROUTE. UH, GETTING THROUGH HERE EVENTUALLY THEY END UP CUTTING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND THEN BACK ONTO CAPITOL DRIVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE INCIDENT. SO IT’S A VERY CONFUSING TIME. A LOT OF DELAYS IN THE AREA. SO YOU WANT TO AVOID IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO BE AT ONE OF THOSE BUSINESSES DOWN BELOW. BUT OTHERWISE I WOULD SAY STEER CLEAR OF THE SCENE BECAUSE IT’S GOING TO BE A WHILE BEFORE THEY GET, UH, THEY HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED THE RECONSTRUCTION IN EARNEST YET. MATT SALEMME A NEWS CHOPPER 12 FLYING ABOVE THAT SCENE WHERE WE CAN DEFINITELY SEE THE TRAFFIC IMPACTS AFTER THIS DEADLY CRASH INTO A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. AGAIN, THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ALONG CAPITOL DRIVE NEAR PEWAUKEE ROAD. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS BREAKI

12 News has confirmed with the sheriff's PIO that there is at least 1 fatality involved in the crash

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly construction zone crash that occurred on Capitol Drive near Pewaukee Road in the city of Pewaukee just after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2024."I was sitting there complaining like, man, we're going to miss this light like ten times. Next thing I know, we just heard the boom," witness Courtney Meredith told 12 News Wednesday. "It was literally a scene straight out of a movie, like I swear. It felt so unreal."Investigators said a 49-year-old man driving a pickup truck westbound in the construction zone on Capitol Drive rear-ended a car, killing the 76-year-old woman behind the wheel. The pickup truck driver then continued west on Capitol Drive and plowed through a group of constructions workers working at the intersection of Capitol Drive and Pewaukee Road."I see an older pickup truck fly through the construction zone that was blocked off because obviously construction was going on, concrete, and when he gets close to the construction, he strikes two constructions workers," Jackson Bewer said. The sheriff's office said a 46-year-old male construction worker died at the hospital from his injuries. The other construction worker, a 47-year-old man, is expected to survive. The identities of those involved have not been released at this time. The sheriff's office would not say if they made any arrests. They said they are still looking into what caused the pickup truck driver to crash.
