S. Tax Washington, putting liability at the $5 million plus figure. This reduction of $107,213 from the amount originally asked by the Internal Revenue Service. Davis, 66, of 639 N. Portage Path, said he made $12 million in payments on behalf of himself and the Tire Rubber Co.

of Tuscumbia, since 1955 for both income and excise taxes. He could not sort out the amount of each. DAVIS said he paid the $12 million in between July, 1955, and last Sept. 30. "Whatever is due is being paid as due." He indicated an agreement with the Government permits him to make payments on the balance at regular intervals.

The socially prominent financier was eager to explain that claims against his wife, Katharine, son, Poncet and daughter, Katherine T. Russell, have been settled. The government had asked $755.770 of the trio, claiming Davis had transferred assets to keep them from tax collectors. The claims were finally settled for $139,990. DAVIS spent 17 months in Federal prison for income tax evasion in 1957 and 1958.

He was paroled from the Federal Penitentiary at Springfield, May 19, 1958. He ran the Robbins Tire from a suite of offices in an Akron hotel. Most of his tax troubles stemmed from that venture. Davis' attorney, James C. Herndon, told the Be a con Journal a "substantial part of the settlement has been paid," but did not verify Davis' figures.
